Borderless Oslo: Cultural evening for the Middle East

Saturday, May 3

Melahuset
7:00 P.M.

Borderless Oslo welcomes you to another cultural evening for the Middle East!

This evening, Baba Jalil Band offers a meeting between different (folk) music traditions where the joy of playing and curiosity serve as a common reference point. Rania Iraki will come to talk about the importance of preserving Palestinian culture through a festival like Visit the West Bank and Ibrahim Nasser will come to talk about the Palestinian family business NASSER that preserves Palestinian culture through tea and food. Not least, DJ Daeva will make us dance to Arabic rhythms.

We open the doors at 7 pm, admission is free and everyone is welcome.

On stage:

With members who have backgrounds in everything from Moroccan folk music, reggae and indie to jazz and pop, Baba Jalil Band offers a concert where everything from Gnawa music and Sahara blues to Issawa and Dakka Marrakchiya merge into a rhythmic and catchy soundscape.

Baba Jalil Band consists of Khalid Laaouam, who was born in Morocco and began his musical career with Sufi folk music as a child. He later learned the Ghaita flute, various percussion instruments and the saxophone. Raciel Torres is a drummer and rhythm genius from Cuba, bassist Erlend A. Tredal is known from several pop and indie projects, Olav Torget is a recognized and versatile guitarist and Othman Hmimar, a well-known gnawa musician with a background from Hoba Hoba Spirit.

Nasim aka Daeva is an Oslo-based DJ and artist born and raised in Tehran. Rhythms travel like people – carriers of stories, with roots that meet and create new expressions. As a DJ, she looks for the bridges they build, where distant sounds meet and dance together. Since 2004, she has been a clear voice on Oslo's club scene and at festivals all over the country, with performances at, among others, Cosmopolite, Blå, Riksscenen, Nasjonalmuseet, Telemarkfestivalen and Oslo Pride. She is also behind the monthly concept 1001 Sound at Dattera til Hagen, where she invites you to a sound and movement adventure across continents.

Ibrahim Nasser is a poet and founder of NASSER, a family business based in Ramallah and Oslo. NASSER celebrates Palestinian culture through authentic food products and teas, celebrating local production and supporting farmers. By providing jobs in the West Bank and maintaining a fair supply chain, NASSER empowers Palestinians in difficult times and helps to promote their food, culture and traditions.

In addition to being a freelance producer and director, Rania Iraki is the project manager for Visit the West Bank, which she has been since last year. She also hosts the Palestinapodden together with Nader Khalayli.

Cultural Evening for the Middle East is organized by Grenseløst Oslo and Melahuset in collaboration with volunteers from Sociologists Against Genocide and Psychologists Against Genocide.
