Building Bridges - Nils Økland / Åsne Valland Nordli / Jozef Luptak Ensemble

Saturday, November 9

7:00 P.M.

"We know we can't change the world with this project. But we can contribute to change; we can inspire and encourage. If music could do more to shape our everyday coexistence, our lives would be better. We live in uncertain times, and mutual understanding is what we need..."

If it doesn't change the world, the Norwegian-Slovak project "Building Bridges" contributes to making the world a slightly better place by building musical bridges that enable the exploration of each other's traditions. Because building bridges enables us to connect with unknown worlds; distant people become acquaintances, acquaintances become friends. By building bridges, we create spaces that are not only there for ourselves, but also for others; a community, a city, a country, maybe even the whole world.

It was in Oslo that cellist Jozef Luptak first met Nils Økland. It wasn't long after Økland had played a few melodies on his hardanger before Luptak began to envision an exciting musical adventure that also involved Boris Lenko on accordion and clarinettist Braňo Dugovič, both of whom move easily in a variety of genres and styles. Soon after, singers Åsne Valland Nordli and Gabriela Kováčiková, and double bassist Róbert Ragan, also joined the journey.

Rehearsals, concerts and recordings became an exploration of new musical worlds, where the musicians' unique experiences, styles and temperaments met and complemented each other. The project has not only resulted in magical soundscapes based on beauty, memories and shared discoveries, but also several concerts and releases, including the album "Spev", which came out in July this year.

On stage:

Åsne Valland Nordli - vocals

Gabriela Kovacikova - vocals

Nils Økland - harding fiddle

Jozef Luptak - cello
