– A Carnatic music meeting

The concert with Ayushi, Sunthar Kanesan and Sneha Sunthar offers an interplay between classical Carnatic instruments, which also shows how different cultural impulses influence the Carnatic tradition.

The stringed instrument vina is often referred to as the “king of Carnatic instruments” and is said to be the only instrument that can perform music that is close to the Carnatic vocal. Award-winning musician Ayushi Sowmya Ramachandran was only three years old when she fell in love with the vina instrument, and at the age of eight she began her apprenticeship with Guru Smt. Seetha Balakrishnan. With her in this concert are Sunthar Kanesan and Sneha Sunthar. Kanesan is a music educator trained at the Norwegian Academy of Music and has played the mirthangam professionally since 1992. Sneha Sunthar is Kanesan’s daughter and plays both the mirthangam and ghatam, an instrument known for having too few female performers.
