A self-composed fusion of traditional Arabic music, pop and jazz performed with an unparalleled love and curiosity for the possibilities of music.
The group Sharkiat is led by musician, composer, arranger and proudsent Fathy Salama. He grew up listening to his family's radio, where he drew inspiration from the music of Uum Kulthum, Abdel El Wahab and Farid el Attrash. At the age of six, he began playing the piano and at 13 he began performing in various clubs in Cairo, before traveling beyond the banks of the Nile to explore the world of jazz and traditional music. He has produced music for artists such as Amr Diab, Mohamed Monir, Ali AlHagar, Cesaria Evora and Omar Al sheriff. Their collaboration with Youssou N'Dour on the album "Egypt" ensured that they were awarded the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Music Album in 2004.
With his own group, Sharkiat, Salama focuses further on the connection between modern and traditional genres, and at Oslo Mela this happens in collaboration with Egyptian and Norwegian music, and of course a dervish dancer.
