Opening Concert

City Hall Square, Main Stage

August 14-16

TBA

– Áššu + Hildegunn Øiseth, Rohini Sahajpal, Prabhu Edouard & Reshail Mansoor

On the occasion of Oslo Mela's 25th anniversary, we invite you to an opening concert on the main stage that connects music and traditions from Sapmi, India, Pakistan and Norway.

Earlier this year, the trio Áššu played at Melahuset . The band consists of Ulla Pirttijärvi, Olav Torget and Kenneth Ekornes, and based on traditional yoiks and original compositions by Ulla Pirttijärvi, their music shows how the yoik, by virtue of being one of our oldest musical expressions, resonates naturally with instruments, tones and rhythms from the other side of the globe such as West African tones and rhythms from Brazil, India and China. At Oslo Mela's opening concert we facilitate a larger meeting between the yoik and various South Asian music traditions. With them at this concert are Áššu Hildegunn Øiseth on buckhorn, Rohini Sahjpal on sitar, Reshail Mansoor on vocals and Prabhu Edouard on tablas and vocals.

The seven musicians come from different musical worlds and traditions, and when they meet on stage, a new and unique musical story is created that resonates and unites timeless tones and traditions.

On stage:

  • Ulla Pirttijärvi – yoik
  • Olav Torget – baritone guitar / n'goni
  • Kenneth Ekornes – percussion
  • Hildegunn Øiseth – fenugreek
  • Prabhu Edouard – tablas and vocals
  • Rohini Sahajpal – sitar
  • Reshail Mansoor - vocals
