At this concert, the audience can experience the outstanding Palestinian Oud player and composer Nizar Rohana. This is his first visit to Norway, on Melahuset will perform music from his new album “Safa” (“Purity”) together with Iranian Tombak master Kaveh Mahmudyan. On “Safa”, Rohana delves into the Oud as a solo instrument, tracing his personal musical development from his first encounter with the instrument to the present day. The music expresses a longing for reason and clarity amidst the harsh realities unfolding in the Middle East. “Safa” features a rich blend of diverse cultural expressions; the music highlights a modern musical voice, while being deeply rooted in Arabic Maqam. In this special concert setting, the subtle rhythmic colors of the Tombak add new dimensions to the music, creating a dialogue between two instruments that share long and intertwined musical histories.

Nizar Rohana is a renowned Palestinian Oud player and composer, known for his virtuoso performance of contemporary compositions while honoring the instrument’s rich idiomatic tradition. A leading figure in the Palestinian music scene, he has collaborated with many performers and performed on international stages for over two decades. In addition to his career as a musician, Rohana teaches Arabic music at the University of Amsterdam and Oud at the Conservatorium Maastricht in the Netherlands. His discography includes the critically acclaimed album “Sard” (“Story”) from 2008 and the solo album “Safa” from 2024. He continues to develop new international projects and recordings, marking him as a distinctive voice in the world of Oud music.

Kaveh Mahmuidyan (Kurdish, from Iran, living in Norway) is a composer and percussionist with the traditional percussion instrument Tombak from Iran as his main instrument. Mahmudiyan has collaborated and played with many leading musicians and composers, both nationally and internationally. He has performed at several prestigious and internationally respected festivals and in concerts with world-renowned musicians, including Dariush Talai, Ahmad Al Khatib and Hamid Motebassem. In Norway, he has worked with, among others, Harpreet Bansal, Jon Balke, Javid Afsari-Rad, Trygve Seim, Anne Hytta and Bugge Wesseltoft. Mahmudiyan has several releases behind him, including the solo album “Between Hands” which was released on Global Sonics in 2025.
