"The story of caste cannot be understood by focusing on the South Asian landscape: one has to extend the study to other places where caste was interpreted, embraced and rejected. Caste reveals how localized institutions provided a basis for imaginative impulses of caste to survive amidst amorphous forms. Caste, therefore, is a journey, an itinerary of global identities and demographics".
About « Caste. A Global Story »
Suraj Yengde is a researcher, Dalit activist, and one of India's leading young intellectuals. In "Caste. A Global Story," Suraj Yengde shines a light on the Dalit experience internationally, from indentured labourers in the nineteenth-century Caribbean to present-day migrant workers in the Middle East.
What have been the impacts of colonialism, religion and nationalism on caste-based hierarchies worldwide? What can we learn from caste-related movements in India and internationally? Why hasn''t the South Asian diaspora embraced the anti-caste struggles of the homeland? And what are the limits of Dalit-Black solidarity? Combining history, ethnography and archival research, he explores the global footprint of the struggle against caste and delivers a powerful analysis of world politics from the perspective of one of the most oppressed communities on earth. Yengde asks probing questions about the nature of inequality and calls for a cosmopolitan Dalit universalism as a crucial part of today's struggle for social justice and equality.
